Just around Ranchi, is
located an important Jain pilgrimage - Parasnath. It is perched
atop of a hill and is reached by a stiff climb on foot. The 24 temples,
representing the Jain tirthankars, stand at an altitude of 1,366
m. Parasnath, the 23rd tirthankars, achieved nirvana at this spot.
It is 300 km by road from Calcutta, and Dhanbad is the nearest large
town with hotels.
