DWARKA CITY

Ahmedabad Anand Bharuch Bhuj Baroda Bhavnagar Dwarka Gandhidham Junagadh Kutch Palitana Porbandar Saputara Surat Siddhpur Rajkot

Dwarka is situated 145 Kms. from Jamnagar onn the extreme western tip of the Kathiawar Peninsula. Dwarka is one of the four most holy Hindu pilgrimage sites and is closely related to the Krishna legend. It was here that Krishna set up his capital after fleeing from Mathura.

Dwarkanath, the name of the temple, is a title of Lord Krishna. It is a pilgrim centre. It is also is India's seven sacred cities.Visit to this place gives eternal happiness to the Hindus. It was earlier known as Dwaravati, nowadays known as Dwarka. Dwara means door and Dwarika means a small gateway or doorway.

The temple is only open to Hindus (though one visitor reported that you can sign a form and go in), but the exterior, with its tall five-storey spire supported by 60 columns, is far more interesting than the interior. Archaeological excavations have revealed five earlier cities at the site, all now submerged. Dwarka is the site of an important festival at Janmashtami which falls in August or September.

The other places of interest in and around Dwarka are Hanuman Tank, Sun temple at Vasai, the ancient Maitraka capital called Kankavati, the museum of Sharadpith Math, the Mahadev temple at Nageshwar, the Ved Bhavan (school for vedic teaching), Shri Jagatguru Shankaracharya Math ( Hindu Monastic establishment founded in 8th century by the revered teacher Shankaracharya). The inner sanctum of the main Dwarkadish Temple - known as the Nij Mandir - dates back 2,500 years. The 5 storey temple is supported on 60 columns and is crowned by a soaring elaborately carved spire.

Island of Bet - A little north of Dwarka, a ferry crosses from Okha to the island of Bet, where Vishnu is said to have slain a demon. There are modern Krishna temples on the island and other important religious sites around Dwarka.
