Kullu is the district
headquarters of the valley but is not the main tourist centre
that honour goes to Manali. Kullu is reasonably set up with hotels
and other facilities, and is not a bad place, especially around
Dhalpur, but many visitors dont bother to stay long in Kullu as
there are nicer places around the valleys. Kullu is small enough
to walk around. The maidan area at Dhalpur, where Kullus festivals
are held, is the nicest part of town. The centre of town is probably
the area around the taxi stand. From there a busy footpath heads
towards the large bus station area called Sarwari, full of shops
and cheap guesthouses. The road from the bus station and heads towards
Manali through Akhara Bazaar, which is a good place to buy Kullu
shawls and other handicrafts.
Kullu was once known as Kulanthapitha- the end of the forbidding
heights of the Greater Himalaya, and by the banks of the shining
river Beas lay the fabled Silver Valley.
