The major manufacturing
industries located in Maharashtra include textiles, chemicals, metallurgical
industries, transport equipment, automobiles and machinery machine
tools, each of which account for more than one-fourth of the country's
production in those industries.
Other significant industries
in Maharashtra include food products, beverages, tobacco and tobacco
products, paper, paper products and printing, rubber, plastic, petroleum
and coal products, electronic hardware and software. Nearly 15 percent
of the total number of manufacturing units in India are located
in Maharashtra.
The principal industrial zone
in Maharashtra is the Mumbai - Thane - Pune belt, accounting for
almost 60 percent of the State's output. Efforts are being made
to promote other industrial areas like Nagpur, Aurangabad, Solapur,
Jalgaon, Raiga, Amravati and Ratnagiri, by building the necessary
infrastructure and creating an environment conducive to industrial
development.
