PLACES OF WORSHIP - KARNATAKA

Chamundi Temple, Mysore

       It is situated on the heights of Chamundi Hills. The Temple is having large silver gates and golden idols. It is considered to be a very religious temple, where the blessings of the goddess helps devotees to fulfill their need. The temple is approx. 13 kms from Mysore and is only accessable by road from the city of Mysore and is covered by all the package tour operators and the city excursions.

 

Bull Temple, Banglore

      Bull Temple is situated on Bugle Hill at the southern end of Bull Temple Rd. This is one of Bangalore’s oldest temples.It was built by Kempegowda in the Dravidian style in the 16th century. It contains a huge granite monolith of Nandi similar to the one on Mysore’s Chamundi Hill. Non-Hindus are allowed to enter the temple and the priests are friendly. It’s especially interesting on weekends, when there are often musicians, wedding processions and even pujas to bless new motor cars.


Mangaladevi Temple

       This temple has a history of how Mangalore got its name. It is about 3 Kms from the city center. Goddess Mangala Devi, the divine mother was immensely pleased with the devotion of Bhargava and told him that she would dwell in his place as "Mangala Devi" to be worshipped by devotees. People started knowing this place as Mangalapura which later became Mangalore.


Kadri Temple

       This temple is the abode of Lord Manjunatha. It is about 5 Kms from the city centre. Installed by a Siddha (Sage) by name Machendranatha, this temple is believed to be of the - 10th Century. The main feature of this temple is the ever flowing water from the "Gomukha" meaning "from the mouth of cow's idol". It is believed to have curing properties for some skin diseases. These days the water is utilised for farming nearby. This temple also has a cave called "Pandava Guhe" it is believed that the Pandavas came to this cave & stayed there. Another unique feature of this temple is that the temple tank or the "Kalyani" is at a higher level than the temple itself which is not the case in any of the other temples where the tank is situated much below the temple height.



Gokarnatheshwara Temple

      About 2 Kms from the city centre, this temple is the abode of Lord Gokarnatha. This temple has a very short past, founded by the Billawa Community of Mangalore this temple belongs to era of modern architecture.

    

Venkatramana Temple

      It is one of the very old temples of Mangalore situated on the Carstreet where Lord Srinivasa is the presiding deity popularly known as Venkatarama.



Maha Maya Temple

      This temple has a history of about 2000 years & is the abode of the incarnation of Goddess Kali.
