Golden
Temple
The Golden temple is located in Amritsar,
holy city of the Sikhs, famous for its full golden dome, it is one
of the sacred piligrim spots for Sikhs, once the dense forest was
the home of Guru Nanak. The mandir is built on a 67 ft square of
marble and is a two storeyed structure, being upper half of the
temple built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh with approximately 400 kg
of gold-leaf. The Golden Temple is surrounded by a number of other
famous temples like the Durgiana Temple. The 'Guru Ka Langar' offers
free food to around 20,000 people everyday. The number shoots up
to 100,000 on special occasions. A visitor must cover his / her
head before entering the temple premises.
Guru ka Langar and
Gurudwaras
All Sikh temples have a community
kitchen and in this one volunteers prepare free meals for thousands
of people every day. The food is very basic - chapatis and lentils
- but it's all prepared and dished out in a surprisingly orderly
fashion.
The Durgiana Mandir
This 16th century Hindu temple too has
a golden dome and silver portals, this is the main Hindu worship
center up north. It is dedicated to the Hindu war goddess Durga.
It is surrounded by a tank called Kamalsar.
